Hey friends, it’s Dan Can here—your deal-finding entrepreneur, insurance guy, real estate investor, and host of The Invested Life.
Imagine this: All four of my businesses vanish overnight. Poof. Gone. What would I do? I wouldn’t rush to rebuild the companies. I’d start by rebuilding my relationships. That’s the foundation that lasts.
In a recent episode of the podcast, I dove deep into this idea, pulling timeless wisdom from Rabbi Daniel Lapin and Susan Lapin’s book Business Secrets from the Bible: Spiritual Success Strategies for Financial Abundance. (Yes, America’s Rabbi himself—brilliant guy, and his wife co-authored this gem.)
This book isn’t your typical business read. It unpacks familiar Bible stories and applies them to modern life, starting with relationships as the core of success. Here’s what hit me hardest—and what I want to share with you.
Secret #1: Be Obsessed with the Needs of Others
Lapin kicks off with this: God wants us to be obsessively preoccupied with the needs and desires of His other children. (My paraphrase: Become a master at thinking about others first.)
In our “me, myself, and I” culture, this feels radical. But it’s powerful. People crave authentic connection in a world full of AI and superficial interactions. That’s where trust comes in.
I live this out. Between my four businesses, I give 1–7 referrals a week. Compound that over a year—it’s massive impact. Why? Because I love connecting people with businesses I know, like, and trust. You can do the same today. Who can you refer right now? One positive introduction can change someone’s business trajectory.
Specialization: Your Gift to the Community
The book ties this to specialization. God designed us to excel in something specific so we can bless others (and be blessed in return).
For me? I’m a connector. Networking, communication, high-trust relationships—that’s my lane. My businesses reflect it:
– Insurance (high-trust—I’m there when people need me most)
– Private investment fund (Wave Capital—helping accredited investors)
– Real estate focus (buying, restoring, and insuring homes)
What’s your specialization? Educator? Builder? Counselor? Whatever it is, lean in. Become great at it. Passion shows. People notice. Referrals follow. Partnerships form.
I’m so fired up about this book that my Tuesday discipleship group (five guys in the marketplace) is studying it chapter by chapter in 2026. We want to live obsessed with serving others and laser-focused on our gifts.
A Painful Lesson: Listen to the Specialists
Let me share a “Dan Can Musing” from when I was 19—young, invincible, and full of pride.
Mom insisted I get my wisdom teeth out before college. Dentist warns: No hard foods, no strenuous activity, let the sockets heal. Me? “Whatever, doc.”
I eat Chinese food days later. Then jump off a railroad trestle bridge into a river with new college buddies (not the ties—the high supports!). Pure adrenaline… and stupidity.
Monday in Psych 101? I rest my face on my fist. Socket pops open. Disgusting mess floods my mouth. I yell “Oh sick!” and bolt to the bathroom. Called the dentist—they laughed, told me to get a syringe kit. Lesson learned the hard way: Ignore specialists at your peril.
In business and life, listen to the experts. Specialize yourself, but respect those who know more in other areas. It’s how we build strong communities.
Take Action in the Next 72 Hours (The Law of 72)
Lapin and the Bible remind us: We’re made for community. Success is mutual—I help you, you help me. My mantra? Serve, serve, serve… until they ask. Then share the hope I have in Christ.
Practical steps:
– Write down your 1, 3, and 12 (like I did with my boys):
– 1: Your best friend/business relationship—how’s it doing?
– 3: Your top strategic partners.
– 12: Your broader network (if you’re blessed with that many!).
– Plan Q1 2026 investments in those relationships: Coffee, gifts (I love “giftology”—meaningful, thoughtful items), content sharing.
– Specialize: Identify your gift and double down.
One more fun challenge: If this resonated, text the podcast link (or this post) to your 1 and 3. Say, “Hey, check this out—great principles for friendship/business.”
Dan Can listeners: Love well and do good.
